AND NOW THE SHIPPING FORECAST
An oil portrait on linen capturing a critical moment at dawn with the trawlermen of Newlyn pulling in the cod end full of hake. A typical stormy situation off the coast of Cornwall with the boat heaving and creaking in the maelstrom of the unforgiving sea. The trawlermen meeting this danger with raucous banter, a sense of communal endeavour and a steely determination. The new day appearing on the horizon is beckoning them to return to port with their catch. With the Shipping Forecast announcing the approaching weather, it’s full steam ahead!
The journey to Newlyn for the sitting was accompanied by torrential rain and battering winds. The date was set for after the last fish auction before Christmas to make sure all the boats were safely in port.
